Inter-Parliamentary Union deplores Israeli settlements legalization law

RAMALLAH, February 9, 2017 (WAFA) - The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) MP Saber Chowdhury Thursday expressed his disappointment and deplored the Israeli parliament’s adoption of the legalization law, which retroactively legalizes Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

In a press release, Chowdhury said this law will most likely seriously threaten all efforts exerted to come up with peaceful solutions to the conflict in the Middle East, including the Two-State solution which received support from the international community.

He explained that the law would prevent all chances to establish a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.

“It would retroactively enable building Israeli settlements on Palestinians’ private land. Such actions would lead to more instability and undermine security in the region.”

Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the IPU communicated with the Israeli parliament to persuade it to annul the decision for the sake of the peace process between the two people, saying this move stems from the IPU’s believe in “dialogue to solve conflicts.”

Chowdhury commended the Palestinian Authority for its commitment to peace and said such efforts should be strengthened.
