RAMALLAH, February 8, 2017 (WAFA) – Ofer military court Wednesday issued administrative detention orders against 31 Palestinians prisoners, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) said in a statement.
Mahmoud al-Halaby, PPS attorney, said one of the prisoners is Mohammad al-Qiq, a journalist who went on a 94-day hunger strike in protest of his detention without a trial in November 2015.
Al-Qiq was released in May 2016 after reaching an agreement with Israeli authorities. Al-Qiq has declared a new open hunger strike following his arrest again in January 2017.
Al-Halaby said nine administrative orders were issued against prisoners detained for the first time, or were arrested again after their release.
Administrative detention is arrest and detention of individuals by the state without trial, usually for security reasons. Israel routinely employs administrative detention with thousands of Palestinians being held in Israeli prisons as administrative detainees for prolonged periods of time.
