RAMALLAH, February 3, 2017 (WAFA) – The clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians, particularly in Nablus district, and reprisal offensive against Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.
Al-Ayyam said Israeli forces shot and injured three Palestinian teenagers and caused dozens other to suffocate during clashes in Nablus and Jerusalem districts.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida explained the three teenagers were shot and injured with live ammunition in eastern Nablus.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida also covered the funeral procession of 16-year-old Palestinian Muhammad Zeidan in Bir Nabala village, northwest of Jerusalem, it its main front page news item.
Zeidan was laid to his rest after his body was returned to his family Wednesday night after being held by Israeli authorities for over two months.
Zeidan was shot dead by Israeli forces after he allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack near Shufat checkpoint in East Jerusalem on November 25.
Al-Ayyam said Israeli forces detained a total of 23 Palestinians during overnight raids across the West Bank. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said detainees totaled 25.
The dailies also covered a vehicular accident when a Palestinian woman driving a rental car hit an Israeli police vehicle and crashed into a gate near Jaba’ town at the entrance of Geva Benyamin settlement in Jerusalem district.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said three Israeli policemen were injured, while al-Ayyam said the three were civilians. The woman was also injured.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli occupation authorities uprooted 1,000 olive trees from an area of 104 dunums of Palestinian land in the Qalqiliya district village of Azzun in order to construct a settler-only by-pass road in the area.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli settlers took to the streets around the West Bank city of Nablus, ]reportedly causing Israeli forces to close the Juwwara checkpoint in both directions[.
Highlighting reprisal offensive by Israeli Prison Service (IPS) against Palestinian detainees, the dailies reported “escalating tensions” in Israeli prisons.
Al-Quds said Palestinians launched a campaign in solidarity with detainees, while al-Ayyam said IPS punitively transferred detainees from Ktziot and Nafha to other prisons.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported head of the Palestinian Committee of Detainees’ Affairs Issa Qaraqe as warning against the “inevitable outburst of the situation”.
On the other hand, al-Quds reported in its main news item the White House warned Israel against ongoing settlement construction.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the White House urging Israel to stop the construction of new settlements in the West Bank.
The dailies also spotlighted Jordanian King Abdullah II’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington.
Al-Quds said Abdullah and Trump discussed the Middle East peace process and bilateral relations, while al-Hayat al-Jadida said they agreed to intensify efforts to restart the peace process.
Finally, the dailies said President Mahmoud Abbas met with his Bangladeshi counterpart Muhammad Abdul Hamid to discuss developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.
