Jordanian monarch warns of consequences of moving US embassy to Jerusalem

WASHINGTON, February 1, 2017 (WAFA) – Jordanian King Abdullah II Tuesday warned against the regional consequences of moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

According to Jordan News Agency (Petra), Abdullah reiterated that the relocation of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would have regional consequences that would undermine the opportunities for peace and reaching the two-state solution.

He also reportedly reiterated this move would also have regional consequences that would weaken the chances of a success in the war against terrorism.

Abduallah said that moving the embassy from Tel Aviv will have negative impacts on the region’s security and stability, stressing the importance of the sacred city of Jerusalem’s for Arab and Muslim peoples.

He explained that such a step would “increase the anger and despair among Arabs and Muslims, enabling extremists to further spread their dark ideologies and agendas.”

He renewed that “there is no alternative to the two-state solution, which guarantees justice, freedom and stability”, stressing the importance of “avoiding measures that may undermine opportunities to resume the peace process.”

The monarch reportedly highlighted “the significance of the unity and stability in Syria and Iraq, as well as the need to work out inclusive political solutions to curb the threat of sectarian division.” 

He reportedly called for international cooperation in the war against terrorism that threatens the whole world and underlined at the same time the need of assessing the consequences of some policies in order to prevent extremists from boosting their role and isolating Islamic communities in the West.

Abdullah made his remarks during separate meetings with leaders and members of the US congress in Washington, DC.

The monarch reportedly met with Senate leaders and the heads and members of the Senate’s Appropriations Committee and its Armed Services Committee.

He also held talks with the chairpersons and members of the US House of Representatives’ foreign affairs and armed services committees in addition to its subcommittee on state, foreign operations and related programs.

Abdullah is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump face-to-face at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday.
