Over 100 settlers enter al-Aqsa Mosque, spark tension in the old city

JERUSALEM, January 25, 2017 (WAFA) – Over 100 Jewish settlers Wednesday broke into al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem under the protection of Israeli police, according to local sources.

The settlers, who were accompanied and heavily protected by Israeli police, were divided into small groups, and broke into al-Aqsa Mosque via al-Magharba gate.

Worshipers present at the site chanted religious slogans to protest the settlers’ provocative tours at the mosque’s yard, which is considered a holy site for Muslims as it is the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

Jewish settlers break into al-Aqsa Mosque on regular basis, amidst the tension in the region as US president Donald Trump is considering moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, in a move that is excepted to ignite a ‘religious war’ according to some Islamic and Palestinian figures.
