Newspapers Review: Palestinian shot dead by soldiers near Tulkarm focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, January 18, 2017 (WAFA) – The shooting to death of Nidal Mahdawi, 44, by Israeli forces near the northern West Bank city of Tulkarm hit the front page headlines in Palestinian local dailies on Wednesday.

Al-Ayyam said Mahdawi was killed after he allegedly attempted to stab Israeli soldiers.

The dailies also reported on the burial of Qusai al-Imour, who was killed the day before by Israeli soldiers in the village of Taqou in the Bethlehem district.

Al-Ayyam said clashes erupted between Palestinians and Israeli forces following the funeral.

Al-Quds said Israeli bulldozers demolished Palestinian structures in Tana locality, east of Nablus, and the Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Issawiya.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida explained bulldozers demolished a Palestinian home, metal-sheet structure and two animal barns in Khirbet al-Tawil, southeast of Nablus.

Al-Ayyam added a Palestinian man was forced to demolish his own home in Jerusalem and that Israeli forces delivered demolition notices to two Palestinian structures in the Jordan Valley.

The dailies said Israeli navy opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats off Gaza shore injuring at least a fisherman and damaging a boat.

Al-Ayyam said a total of 31 Palestinians were detained by Israeli forces during overnight raids across the West Bank. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said a total of 30 Palestinians were detained, including the widow of a slain Palestinian.

Furthermore, the dailies said the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, is scheduled to vote on a proposed bill to banish families of Palestinian attackers.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, will also vote on a bill that calls on Israel to annex the West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Adumim near Jerusalem.

The dailies reported the UN envoy for the Middle East Nickolay Mladenov as warning against the consequences of Israeli calls to annex West Bank Area C.

He was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating the calls for the annexation of parts or the whole of West Bank Area C “risk destroying the prospects for peace.”

Al-Quds reported President Mahmoud Abbas warning incoming US President Donald Trump that moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem would be a “provocation”.

Al-Ayyam reported him also warning that this move would “undermine the peace process,” while he was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida as pledging to utilize all diplomatic and political means to stand firm in the face of this move.

The dailies said Palestinian factions announced a deal to form a national unity government after three days of reconciliation talks in Moscow.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat also covered Abbas’ statements on the worsening electricity crisis in the besieged Gaza coastal enclave.

He was reported in al-Ayyam as pledging not to abandon his duties toward the people of Gaza.

He was also reported in both dailies as stating Palestinian leadership would not succumb to blackmail from Hamas.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Acting Minister of Energy Zafer Melhem as stating the Palestinian government should be enabled to assume its duties to solve the electricity crisis.
