RAMALLAH, December 20, 2016 (WAFA) – The assassination of the Russian ambassador to Turkey and the truck ramming into Christmas market in Germany that left 12 people dead, as well as local developments were the highlight of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.
Al-Ayyam reported in two separate main front page stories on the events in Germany and Turkey while al-Quds highlighted on the top of its page the Turkey event and lower down on the page the developments in Germany.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with the Chinese representative to Palestine who presented Abbas with a letter the paper described as letter of support from his Chinese counterpart.
The paper also highlighted Israeli measures in Jerusalem, such as demolition of a car dealership showroom in Jerusalem, as well as closure of main roads leading to several villages in the Ramallah area.
It also highlighted the situation of the two hunger striking prisoners, Anas Shadid and Ahmad Abu Farah, and said Shadid was admitted to the ICU in hospital due to deterioration in his health following more than 80 days of fast.
The three dailies reported on the meeting of the Arab ministerial committee in Cairo that is working on a draft resolution to be submitted to the Security Council on Israeli settlements in the occupied territories.
Al-Quds said in its headline: “Actual movement began on submitting an Arab resolution to the Security Council against settlements in the Palestinian territories.”
The paper also said 177 United Nations member states have voted in favor of a resolution supporting Palestinian right to self-determination.
Developments regarding the proposed evacuation of Amona settlement outpost to a nearby plot of land, also Palestinian-owned, and the hefty compensation the settlers are going to get in addition were reported in the dailies.
Al-Quds said US President-elect Donald Trump had contributed thousands of dollars to the illegal settlement of Beit El near Ramallah in 2003.
The dailies also reported on their front page on the Israeli government campaign against Arab member of Israeli parliament, Basel Ghattas, who is accused of smuggling cellular phones to Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
