Newspaper Review: Egyptian, Israeli Officials Meeting Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, July 11, 2016 (WAFA) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Covering the meeting in its main front page news item, al-Ayyam said Shukri and Netanyahu discussed Egypt-brokered efforts to resume stymied peace talks.

Shukri was reported in al-Quds as stating his visit came as a completion for dialogue and marked a step toward achieving the two-state solution.

He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida as expressing Egypt’s commitment to support a just, comprehensive and permanent solution to the conflict.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported him as speaking of “Egypt’s longstanding sense of responsibility towards peace for itself and all the peoples of the region.”

He was also reported as adding the two-state solution vision is not “far-fetched” and that resolving the decades-old ‘conflict’ would have a “far-reaching and dramatic and positive impact on the overall conditions of the Middle East region.”

The Israeli siege of the southern West Bank district of Hebron also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

Al-Quds said since the shooting attack that targeted a family of Israeli settlers driving between the Israeli settlements of Otniel and Kiryat Arba on July 1, Israeli forces have sealed 250 roads and raided 2,400 Palestinian houses across Hebron district.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli forces tightened the siege on Hebron district, sealing all roads with cement blocks and military checkpoints.

Highlighting Israeli raids into the Hebron towns of Dura and Sair, al-Ayyam said two Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops during the clashes.

Furthermore, the three dailies highlighted Israeli diplomatic to foil a vote on a Palestinian-Jordanian draft concerning Israeli violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the 40th annual session meeting of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee.

Al-Quds reported US Democratic presidential nominee Bernie Sanders failed to include an item calling for ending the Israeli occupation in Democratic Party’s platform.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Secretary-General of PLO Executive Committee Saeb Erekat as holding the Israeli government responsible for the outcomes of disseminating the culture of incitement, violence and racism.
