Newspaper Review: Demolition of Palestinian Houses in Qalandiya Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, July 5, 2016 (WAFA) – The demolition of the family houses of two Palestinians who were killed by Israeli forces in December 2015 hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies said Israeli forces demolished two Palestinian houses in a large-scale overnight raid into Qalandiya refugee camp. Al-Ayyam identified the two Palestinians as Essa Assaf and Anan Abu Habsa, ]who were shot dead after they allegedly stabbed and killed two Israelis in Jerusalem in December 2015[.

Al-Quds said Israeli forces shot and injured dozens of Palestinians during the demolition raid. Al-Ayyam said a total of 22 Palestinians were shot and injured.

Highlighting the start of construction works of new Israeli settlements in Jerusalem, al-Quds said Israeli bulldozers leveled lands that had been seized from Palestinians in 1968 in preparation for the construction of 290 new settler units in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

It added the seized land occupies an area of 3,345 dunums.

Highlighting official Palestinian reaction or response to new Israeli settlement construction plans in Jerusalem, al-Quds said that such plans were widely condemned by the Palestinian leadership who held the Middle East Peace Quartet responsible.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Secretary-General of PLO Executive Committee Saeb Erekat as announcing that the Palestinian leadership would push forward a United Nations Security Council draft resolution on settlement construction.

Highlighting latest detention raids across the West Bank, al-Ayyam said Israeli forces detained 34 Palestinians from the West Bank. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the detainees numbered dozens.

Al-Quds said Israeli police is allowed to use live fire as first resort against Palestinians throwing stones and fireworks.

Highlighting clashes in the Hebron towns of Dura and Ban Na‘im, al-Ayyam said that a Palestinian was shot and injured and others suffocated as Israeli forces opened fire on them during ed clashes.

It said Israel allowed Turkey to transfer funds to Gaza banks as part of the Israeli-Turkish reconciliation deal.

Regionally, the three dailies highlighted the suicide bombs or attacks that struck Saudi Arabia.

They said that several people were killed and others wounded as three suicide bombers struck the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, the vicinity of the US Consulate in Jeddah and the vicinity of a Shia mosque in Qatif.

They said President Mahmoud Abbas decried the attacks and expressed his condolences to King Salman Bin Abdulaziz.
