RAMALLAH, June 25, 2016 (WAFA) – Britain’s official referendum to head out of the European Union (EU), called Brexit, coupled with the killing of a Palestinian woman following an alleged car-ramming attack near Hebron hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.
Covering Brexit in its main front page news item, al-Quds said that the UK’s referendum to exit the EU has induced an earthquake across Europe and raised global concern.
Highlighting the Brexit issue in its main front page news article, al-Ayyam said the UK’s Brexit earthquake overthrew David Cameron and had huge repercussions across Europe and the globe.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida described Brexit as a political earthquake, and said it sparked a “Black Friday” for financial markets.
The three dailies reported that Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian woman from the Hebron town of Bani Na‘im.
Al-Ayyam explained that the woman was “executed” allegedly for attempting to ram her car into two Israeli settlers near the entrance of the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba near the southern West Bank city of Hebron.
Highlighting recent Israeli settlement construction plans, al-Quds said Israel started preparations for the construction of 750 new settler units and sports facilities in Ramot settlement, north of Jerusalem.
Al-Ayyam said that Israel seeks to legalize the settlement outpost of Tappuah Meirav in the northern West Bank district of Salfit.
Furthermore, the three dailies covered President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks affirming his respect for Judaism and the Jewish people around the world.
Abbas was quoted in the three dailies as stating: “Palestine is the cradle of all three divinely-revealed religions, and we don’t intend to do harm to any of them.”
It is worth noting here that Abbas made these remarks as he retracted comments accusing a rabbi of calling for the poisoning of Palestinian water in his speech at the EU.
Highlighting Palestinian Muslims’ access to Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan, the three dailies said that 250,000 Palestinian Muslims prayed at the mosque on the third Friday of Ramadan.
The three dailies reported that Israel ordered the banning of the Palestinian Authority-funded television channel Musawa.
Regionally, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Turkish President Recept Tayyip Erdogan met Hamas leader Khaled Mashal in Ankara to discuss efforts to contain Palestinian differences.
