Newspaper Review: Abbas’ Meeting with European Union Officials Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, June 23, 2016 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with European Union officials in Brussels hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds reported Abbas as reiterating Palestinian leadership’s support to the French bid ]to convene an international conference pushing for the two-state solution with a specific timeline.[

Abbas was quoted in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating: “If Israel want peace ]with its Arab neighbors[, it must withdraw from our land and acknowledge the rights of our people.”

The three dailies said Israeli military returned the body of Mahmoud Badran, 15, who was shot dead by Israeli forces two days earlier while driving back with his friends from Beit Sira village to Beit Ur al-Tahta at night.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli forces sealed the entrance of Beita town and several roads between Beita and the Nablus village of Huwwara purportedly after an Israeli settler had been injured after stones were thrown at his vehicle near Beita junction.

Al-Quds reported Hamas political leader Khalded Mashal as saying that regional plans are underway to reshape the Palestinian landscape.

Referring to a report by the Jerusalem Institute for Israeli Studies published by Haaretz, al-Ayyam said that 82 percent of Palestinians in East Jerusalem had incomes under poverty line in 2014.

Regionally, al-Ayyam said that Israel and Turkey will resume during the next week their military cooperation following the announcement about the normalization of their ties.
