RAMALLAH, June 15, 2016 (WAFA) – Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Witold Waszczykowski, said on Tuesday that the current political impasse cannot continue indefinitely, calling on Palestinians and Israelis to resume peace talks.
In a statement to WAFA, he said his country supports the approach to the settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the form of a comprehensive political agreement between the parties, guaranteeing a lasting and sustainable truce.
“Such agreement should meet the expectations of both sides: the aspirations of the Palestinians to live in a sovereign, democratic state and the security of Israel,” Waszczykowski added.
“The experience of Polish history enables us to understand the aspirations of Palestinian people to independence and freedom. We also know that achieving them requires a long and difficult process of building compromise and consensus,” he continued.
He stressed the urgent need to resume the Israeli-Palestinian dialogue “as the impasse cannot continue indefinitely. Lasting peace in the Middle East will not prevail without showing sufficiently strong will and courage on the part of Israel and the Palestinians.”
The Foreign Minister also expressed hope that the French initiative takes a concrete shape in the coming months. “We shall use this opportunity to reevaluate our approaches aimed at helping both parties to meet and restart direct talks. We trust that both parties are committed to the peaceful settlement of the conflict based on a two-state solution.”
“I believe the European Union should be ready to enhance its presence, leverage and commitment to the process. We advocate a stronger EU engagement in the resumption of peace talks, together with members of Middle East Quartet and all important international stakeholders.”
