Newspaper Review: Israel Elected to Head Permanent UN Committee

RAMALLAH, June 15, 2016 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Wednesday issue the election of Israel for the first time as chair of the United Nations’ legal committee.

They said Israel on Monday won an election to chair the United Nations‘ legal committee, the first time that it will head one of the world body‘s six permanent committees since joining the UN in 1949.

On a different subject, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said Israeli fighter jets bombed several locations east of Gaza City last night.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday received Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Israeli authorities gave a green line for the demolition of the homes of two Palestinians who were killed by Israeli forces in recent months, as a collective punishment against their families.

Al-Quds said the cabinet, in its weekly session on Tuesday, condemned what it called “Israel’s bias towards extremism”.
