GAZA, September 9, 2015 (WAFA) – A Palestinian youth was seriously injured after an unexploded device, which was left behind by the Israeli army east of Gaza, detonated on Wednesday, according to local sources.

WAFA correspondent said an unidentified Palestinian was transferred to hospital in the early morning for shrapnel injuries he sustained after an ordnance left behind by the Israeli army in Shujayea neighborhood, east of Gaza city, detonated. The injured youth is currently placed in an intensive care unit, where his condition was described as critical.

On August 6, four Palestinians were killed and some 30 others were injured after an unexploded device detonated in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, according to media sources.

During the past four years, more than a hundred Palestinians were reported to have been killed across the Gaza Strip due to unexploded ordnances left behind the Israeli army.

Over 7,000 unexploded ordnances were left throughout the Gaza Strip following the 2014 summer’s Israeli aggression on Gaza, according to the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Palestinian territories (OCHA).

According to the UN Development Program (UNDP), unexploded ordnance and the uncontrolled dumping of rubbish pose serious environmental and public health risks to residents of the Gaza Strip.
