New Elementary Boys’ School in Hebron's Beit Kahil

HEBRON, December 18, 2014 (WAFA) – More than $800,000 were invested by the United States Agency for International Development in coordination with the Palestinian Authority to construct the Beit Kahil Elementary Boys’ School, which is expected to accommodate around 220 students.

Beit Kahil is located in the Hebron Governorate, six kilometers northwest of Hebron city. The village has five governmental schools in the village; two boys' schools and three girls' schools, which provide elementary and secondary education.

The most up-to-date data available from the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), which was published in 2007, reveals that there are around 2083 students in the village. The number of children, which must have risen considerably since 2007, makes it quite essential to build another school, especially that Beit Kahil’s largest age group, constituting 49.2% of the total population, is between (0-14) years.

Mohammed Abu Zaid, Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education said the school will provide a safe learning environment and increases the enrollment rate that guarantees a better access to education.

According to the Applied Research Institute - Jerusalem “the education system in the village suffers from many problems including; lack of classrooms, public school services such as playgrounds, laboratories, and funding to establish new schools.”

The school construction project generated 5,878 days of employment, 56 temporary jobs and 11 permanent jobs, said the funding body.

In addition, the US Consulate General in Jerusalem contributed books to the school’s library.  The books include popular works of American fiction and non-fiction, translated into Arabic, on an array of topics including science, geography, biographies, history, and folk tales.
