Newspaper Review: Dailies Highlight Continuing Ceasefire in Gaza

RAMALLAH, August 6, 2014 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their Wednesday issue the continuing ceasefire in Gaza, amid expectations that Israel would meet four Palestinian demands for a fixed and long-term ceasefire.

Following are the main headlines:

 

Al-Ayyam:

-[People of] Gaza inspect the debris of destroyed homes and recover the bodies of ‘martyrs.’

-Initial statistics of the [Israeli] aggression [on Gaza]: 1881 martyrs, including 430 children, 243 women and 70 elderly.

-Israel withdraws its troops from Gaza as ceasefire continues.

-Israeli estimates: some attack tunnels still exist in Gaza.

-An Israeli delegation leaves Cairo after discussing a ceasefire agreement.

-Washington will ‘likely’ take part in Cairo negotiations.

-[Israeli daily] Yediot: Israel may accept some of the Palestinian demands.

-[Foreign Minister Riyad] al-Maliki meets International Criminal Court (ICC’s) prosecutor: we will prosecute and adjudicate those [Israelis] responsible for war crimes.

-[Hamas leader] Haniya: what the ‘enemy’ did not [succeed] to achieve during the war, will not achieve through politics.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida:

 

-Sources: Israel approves four demands of joint Palestinian paper.

-President [Mahmoud Abbas] receives phone calls from [UK’s Foreign Minister] Hammond and [Turkish Foreign Minister] Davutoğlu, and welcomes the ceasefire agreement [between Israel and Gaza].

-[Foreign Minister] al-Maliki confirms, from the Hague, that there was ‘clear evidence’ that Israel has committed war crimes

-A UK Foreign Office minister resigns in protest of London’s policy towards Gaza.

-[former Cuban President Fidel] Castro: Israel practices a new form of ‘Fascism.’

-Confrontations [take place] at al-Aqsa Mosque during a visit by [Israel’s] Minister of Settlement to the mosque.

-Spain freezes arms exports to Israel.

-An [Israeli] guard was stabbed at the entrance of Maale Adumim settlement.

-Council of Ministers forms a committee to follow up with the efforts to rebuild Gaza.

Al-Quds:

 

-President [Abbas] welcomes the ceasefire and calls for continuing to honor it … ceasefire is holding on … [Israeli] army withdraws its troops from Gaza.

-Confrontations [take place] in Aida and Faraa refugee camps, while settlers assault a worker in Jerusalem.

-[Prime Minister] Hamdallah: we are intensifying works with international organizations to continue providing support to Gaza.

-1881 have been ‘martyred,’ 9570 wounded, dozens of thousands of homes, mosques and schools have been destroyed [during Israeli offensive on Gaza].

-[Israeli] soldiers at Nahal Oz [military outpost] were surprised to discover Qassam [Brigades fighters] before their very eyes.

-A UK Foreign Office minister resigns in protest of London’s policy towards the war on Gaza.
