UNRWA warns half a million Palestinians trapped in Gaza within an area of ​ eight square kilometers

NEW YORK, September 29, 2025 (WAFA) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said on Monday that approximately half a million Palestinians remain trapped in Gaza City, in an area of ​​no more than eight square kilometers.  

Meanwhile, 70,000 Palestinians are crowded into each square kilometer in areas in the southern Gaza Strip to which Israel is threatening civilians to flee.

UNRWA spokesperson Adnan Abu Hasna added in press statements published by the UN agency on X account that "in Gaza City, approximately half a million Palestinians are still trapped in an area of ​​no more than eight square kilometers."

Regarding the areas in the southern Gaza Strip to which Israel is threatening Palestinians to flee, Abu Hasna said, "Approximately 70,000 people will be crowded into each square kilometer, with no space to erect a single tent, leaving tens of thousands of families homeless in the streets."

 "Famine has spread with the displaced from Gaza City to the central and southern Gaza Strip," Abu Hasna added. "Urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and for humanitarian aid to be allowed in."

On August 22, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Global Initiative announced in a report that "famine has occurred in Gaza City," and predicted that it would "spread to the cities of Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis by the end of September."
