RAMALLAH, September 24, 2025, WAFA- At least ten ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which aims to break the blockade on the Gaza Strip, were subjected to repeated drone attacks in the Mediterranean Sea early Wednesday morning.
Explosions were heard and communications on board were severely disrupted. No casualties have been reported so far.
The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Palestine, Francesca Albanese, said that seven drone attacks targeted the ships after approximately 15 aircraft flew over the flotilla. She stressed the need for immediate protection.
The committee overseeing the flotilla stated that unidentified objects were thrown at ten boats, causing material damage, while 13 explosions were observed in their vicinity.
The committee indicated that Israel is waging a media disinformation campaign to justify any potential military attack on the humanitarian flotilla, stressing that targeting it constitutes a war crime and a flagrant violation of international law.
Activists on board one of the ships reported that drones dropped an unknown substance with a gunpowder smell, but no injuries were reported.
The Steadfastness Flotilla, which includes humanitarian workers, doctors, artists, and activists from 44 countries, set sail from Tunisia earlier this month after several delays.
This attempt aims to establish a humanitarian corridor and break the blockade imposed on Gaza for more than 23 months. Israel had previously prevented similar attempts to reach Gaza by sea in June and July.
