Britain, Canada and Australia officially reconigze Palestinian statehood

RAMALLAH, September 21, 2025 (WAFA) – The governments of Britain, Canada, and Australia announced on Sunday their official recognition of the State of Palestine, a historic move described as a victory for international justice and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

In separate statements, the three countries affirmed that the recognition comes in compliance with the principles of international law and United Nations resolutions, and embodies the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967, borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement that this recognition is "a step towards reviving hope for a two-state solution," stressing that "this step is not a reward for Hamas, which has no role in a future Palestinian government." He added that the United Kingdom will impose further sanctions on Hamas leaders.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed that his country "supports the two-state solution as the way to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians," noting that this recognition "comes at a sensitive time, as the international community seeks to find a just and lasting solution to the conflict."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that "Australia recognizes the right of the Palestinian people to establish their own independent state," adding that this recognition "reflects Australia's continued commitment to the two-state solution, which is the only way to achieve peace and security in the region."
