UN Security Council votes on Gaza ceasefire resolution amid worsening famine

NEW YORK, September 18, 2025 (WAFA) – The UN Security Council voted on Thursday on a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and unimpeded  humanitarian access to the besieged and devastated enclave.

At the end of August, elected members launched discussions on the draft resolution in response to the UN's official declaration of famine in the Gaza Strip.

The draft resolution, which will be put to a vote this afternoon, calls for an end to restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid and demands an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of detainees.

In August, UN partner experts confirmed the occurrence of famine in part of the Strip, while a UN commission said Israel was committing "genocide" in Gaza.

In 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation has been committing genocidal crimes in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the killing of 65,062 Palestinians, with nearly 165,697  reported injured, most of them children and women, and a famine that has claimed the lives of 432 people, including 146 children.
