UNRWA warns an intensified military operation in Gaza City would put around 1M people at risk of being forcibly displaced again

NEW YORK, August 29, 2025 (WAFA) - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned today that an intensified military operation in Gaza City would put around one million people at risk of being forcibly displaced again.

In a post on X, UNRWA stressed that, “With famine already confirmed in the area, any further escalation would deepen suffering and push more people toward catastrophe.”

Members of the UN Security Council, with the exception of the United States, on Wednesday called in a joint statement for an immediate, permanent, and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, a significant increase in aid throughout the Strip, and for Israel, the occupying power, to immediately and unconditionally lift all restrictions on the delivery of assistance.

They also called on Israel to immediately reverse its decision to seize Gaza City. “This decision, which we reject, will inevitably worsen the already horrific humanitarian situation and endanger the lives of all civilians.”
