Slovenia becomes First EU country to ban arms trade with Israel over Gaza war

LJUBLJANA, August 1, 2025 (WAFA) — Slovenia has announced a full ban on all arms-related trade with Israel, becoming the first European Union country to take such a step in response to the ongoing war in Gaza.

In a statement issued Thursday evening, the Slovenian government confirmed it had approved a decision—initiated by Prime Minister Robert Golob—to prohibit the export, import, and transit of weapons and military equipment between Slovenia and Israel.

“This decision implements Prime Minister Robert Golob’s repeated commitments, most recently made during the European Council summit in June,” the statement said. “He made it clear that if the EU failed to take concrete action by mid-July, Slovenia would act independently.”

The Slovenian government emphasized that internal divisions and a lack of unity within the EU have hindered the bloc’s ability to respond effectively to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“People in Gaza are dying because humanitarian aid is being systematically blocked. They are perishing under rubble, without access to clean water, food, or basic healthcare,” the statement continued. “This is a complete denial of humanitarian assistance and a deliberate obstruction of the bare minimum conditions for survival. In such circumstances, it is the duty of every responsible state to act—even if it means leading the way.”

Slovenia reaffirmed its commitment to upholding international law and human rights, stating that further national measures against the current Israeli government would be prepared in the coming weeks. The government cited Israel’s actions in Gaza as “serious violations of international humanitarian law.”
