Malta to recognize State of Palestine in September

VALLETTA, July 30, 2025 (WAFA) – Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that his country will recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Abela made the announcement just hours after a similar declaration by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and days after France announced its plans to recognize the Palestinian state.

In a Facebook post, Abela said, “Our position expresses our commitment to efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.”

In May, Abela announced that Malta would recognize the State of Palestine during the Two-State Solution conference, which was originally scheduled for June but was postponed and officially kicked off two days ago in New York.

At that time, he emphasized that the worsening humanitarian tragedy resulting from the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip could not be ignored.

He also spoke about his recent visit to Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan, where he met Palestinian children who were transferred to Malta to receive medical treatment, affirming that what he witnessed strengthened his conviction that recognizing the State of Palestine is a moral responsibility dictated by the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the region.
