LISBON, May 21, 2025 (WAFA) – Portugal announced on Wednesday evening that it summoned the Israeli ambassador after a diplomatic delegation visiting the occupied West Bank city of Jenin came under Israeli army fire.
The Portuguese Foreign Affairs Ministry voiced solidarity with the Representative of Portugal in Palestine, Frederico Nascimento, who was part of the delegation, and affirmed that it would take proper diplomatic measures in response to the shooting.
Israeli occupation forces opened fire near a group of foreign diplomats during a visit to Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
The delegation, which included representatives from European Union countries, came under fire as they stood near a gate at the camp’s eastern entrance.
Israeli soldiers fired five rounds in the direction of the group, which also included officials from Arab states and several journalists. No injuries were reported.
The diplomats had travelled to Jenin to observe the worsening humanitarian situation and meet with the local governor.
Footage shared by the Palestinian foreign ministry on X appeared to show Israeli troops firing near the delegation.
The ministry accused Israeli forces of deliberately trying to “intimidate” the foreign delegation as it toured the devastated camp - a frequent target of Israeli raids.
