Minister of Education highlights devastation of Gaza's education sector during meeting with Egyptian counterpart

CAIRO, April 8, 2025 (WAFA) – Minister of Education and Higher Education, Amjad Barham, informed his Egyptian counterpart, Mohamed Abdel-Latif, about the extensive damage inflicted upon the education sector in the Gaza Strip and outlined coordination mechanisms to support Palestine’s educational process.

In a meeting at the Ministry of Education in Cairo, Minister Barham provided a detailed account of the severe impact of the recent Israeli aggression on Gaza’s educational infrastructure. He reported that over 95% of schools had been destroyed, with 293 out of 309 schools rendered non-operational due to complete or partial destruction. Additionally, universities were significantly affected, with approximately 85% of their buildings reduced to rubble. Consequently, over 720,000 students in Gaza have been impacted, with approximately 700,000 deprived of their right to education.

Minister Barham also emphasized the critical situation faced by approximately 20,000 primary and secondary school students, along with 4,500 university students, all of whom endured a complete disruption of their education during the war.

Despite these overwhelming challenges, he added, the Ministry was able to resume educational activities through online learning platforms. New virtual schools and educational centers were established, ensuring that the education process continued despite the ongoing challenges of displacement and the persistent destruction of infrastructure.
