Jordan's King and German chancellor call for immediate international action to halt humanitarian tragedy in Gaza

RAMALLAH, April 3, 2024 (WAFA) – Jordanian King Abdullah II called on the international community to take a clear stance and immediate action to halt the humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip, which has reached indescribable levels.

During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz following talks in Berlin, he stressed that the Israeli war on Gaza must stop, the ceasefire must be restored, and humanitarian response efforts must resume.

The Jordanian King Abdullah II noted that Jordan is doing everything in its power to help alleviate the difficult humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip by sending aid in every possible way, appreciating Germany's support for the humanitarian response in the Strip.

He reiterated the need to halt the dangerous escalation in the West Bank, noting that tens of thousands of citizens have been forcibly displaced from their homes and villages. He stated that the displacement of citizens in the West Bank and Gaza threatens to plunge the entire region into instability.

The Jordanian King Abdullah II warned of the danger of attacks on Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, which are causing further tension and undermining any chance for peace.

He pointed out that the way forward lies through a political solution based on the two-state solution, ensuring peace and security for Palestinians, Israelis, and the entire region. He praised Germany's support for the two-state solution and its positive stance on the Arab plan for the reconstruction of Gaza.

The Jordanian King Abdullah II said that the violation of the ceasefire is a major setback for everyone. However, in the coming weeks, if the ceasefire is restored, Arab foreign ministers will come to Europe to explain to their European partners how to move forward on these challenges, and then they will head to the United States. He expressed his hope that this will result in the development of a sound plan that can gain everyone's support.

For his part, Chancellor Scholz emphasized the necessity of restoring the ceasefire in Gaza and allowing humanitarian aid to enter, warning of the danger of not allowing this aid in, adding that this cannot and must not continue, as many people are starving and suffering amid the ongoing aggression and the lack of support and medical assistance.

He explained that the lasting peace required to stabilize the situation in Gaza and the West Bank can only be achieved through a political solution. Therefore, it is imperative to return to serious negotiations with the aim of agreeing on a solution after the war in the Gaza Strip.

He reiterated Germany's commitment to the two-state solution as the only sustainable solution that guarantees peace and security in the Middle East, noting Jordan's prominent role in this regard.

Scholz praised Jordan's support for humanitarian aid to Gaza and its role in stabilizing the situation through its guardianship of the holy sites in Jerusalem.
