600 Portuguese figures sign petition condemning Trump’s plan to displace Gaza's population

LISBON, February 14, 2025 (WAFA) – A group of prominent Portuguese figures has launched a petition in solidarity with Palestine, garnering signatures from around 600 political, academic and military figures, along with leading journalists.

Addressed to the Portuguese government and the United Nations, the petition expressed support for the Palestinian people while denouncing what it describes as Israel’s genocide and the intolerable U.S. proposals regarding the forced displacement of Gaza’s population.

The signatories urged Portugal and the European Union to take a firm stance against any forced displacement of Palestinians and to uphold their right to self-determination.

The petition also condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to seize control of Gaza, forcibly expel its remaining population of nearly two million people and transform the enclave into a so-called resort.

Palestinian Ambassador to Portugal, Rawan Sulaiman, welcomed the petition, praising the signatories for their support of Palestinian rights and their rejection of genocide and all displacement schemes targeting Gaza’s population and the annexation of the West Bank.

She stressed that the call for the Portuguese government to recognize the State of Palestine would contribute to achieving sustainable peace in the region, upholding justice and ensuring compliance with international and humanitarian law.
