Newspapers Review: Launch of Arab Summit Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, March 26, 2013 (WAFA) – Two of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused Tuesday on the Arab summit in Doha with al-Quds highlighting a decision by Qatar to announce a plan to support the Palestinian economy, rebuild Gaza, revive the peace process and reconciliation.

Al-Ayyam said in its main headline that the presence of Syria’s opposition leader Muath Khatib at the summit will give priority attention to the Syrian issue without compromising the Palestinian question.

The Arab summit took a lower spot on the front page of al-Hayat al-Jadida, whose two top stories were on Israel resuming transfer of funds to the Palestinian Authority on regular basis and the second story focused on the 2013 Palestinian budget Prime Minister Salam Fayyad is going to present to his government for a vote.

These two subjects were also covered on the front page of Al-Quds, which also highlighted statements by United Nations Special Coordinator Robert Serry in which he said, according to the headline, that “there is a chance for a new beginning to the Middle East peace process.”

Al-Ayyam highlighted the health situation of Palestinian prisoner Samer Issawi, who has been on hunger strike since August demanding his release from prison.

Attempts by Jewish fanatics to carry out rituals inside the yards of al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem were also highlighted on the front page of the daily, which also reported on its front page on the situation in Syria and Egypt.

The Jewish fanatics’ violation of the sanctity of al-Aqsa Mosque was also highlighted in al-Hayat al-Jadida, which also reported on its front page on the health situation of Issawi.

The paper also said that Egypt arrested 25 members of Hamas and al-Qaeda in the Sinai and another story also from Egypt said that orders were given to arrest five political activists.

A story about the talks between Turkey and Israel regarding compensation for the families of the Turkish nationals Israel has killed in the 2010 flotilla incident was also highlighted on the front page of al-Hayat al-Jadida.
