RAMALLAH, June 9, 2012 (WAFA) – Almost 90,000 Palestinian students started Saturday the first day of the general high school exams, known as tawjihi, in the West Bank and Gaza, according to the Ministry of Education.
Deputy Minister of Education Jihad Zakarneh told WAFA that 50,158 students attended the examination in the West Bank and 37,453 in Gaza.
Students in the West Bank and Gaza sat for the same exams and at the same time for the first time since the Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007.
In a related matter, Quartet envoy Tony Blair visited a school located in the village of Anata, just outside Jerusalem, to show support for efforts by the Palestinian Authority to develop education.
The school is located in Area C of the West Bank, which is under full Israeli military control. Israel prevents Palestinian development in this area, which makes more than 60% of the occupied West Bank.
