Newspapers Review: Daily Focuses on Settlers’ Attack against Palestinians

RAMALLAH, May 20, 2012 (WAFA) – Al-Ayyam newspaper Sunday highlighted the Israeli settlers’ attack against Palestinians in south of Nablus, shooting one Palestinian in the neck and hitting another with a stone in the head.

The daily reported that Israeli settlers provocatively attacked Palestinian residents and houses in Asira al-Qibliya, a village south of Nablus, leading to clashes erupted between the armed settlers and the local residents. The daily printed a photo of Palestinians carrying the man who was shot to get medical care.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli police ordered to close the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan and the roads leading to the town because Israeli settlers will march in the occupied city on the occasion of Jerusalem Day, when Israel occupied East Jerusalem and annexed it to Israel.

The daily said Israeli settlers uprooted and destroyed olive and fruit trees in the Hebron-town area of Beit Ummar and the town of Bourin in south of Nablus, and printed a picture of an Israeli soldier carrying a Palestinian child after being arrested in Beit Ummar.

Al-Quds published an exclusive interview with President Mahmoud Abbas during his visit to Cairo, stressing that he will seek the United Nations to obtain a Palestinian statehood membership if Israel did not respond positively, adding that he would negotiate with Israel on implementing the signed agreement after obtaining the membership.

The daily also quoted Abbas denying any arrangements for a meeting with Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal, and emphasizing that the “ball is in Hamas court now.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a picture of Abbas’ meeting with the Emir of Qatar Hamad Al Thani in the Qatari capital Doha on Saturday, and reported as well on Abbas’ previous meeting with the chairman of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of Egypt, Mohammad Tantawi, during Abbas’ visit to Egypt.
