Newspapers Review: Abbas’ Visit to Egypt Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, May 19, 2012 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Egypt was the prime focus of Saturday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida’s prime headline highlighted Abbas’ meeting with the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Ali Jomaa, during which they discussed ways to rally support for Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem, as well as Abbas’ meeting with Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi. Abbas and Arabi agreed to take the issue of the Palestinian prisoners to the United Nations.

Al-Quds prime front page article reported on the Israeli army crackdown against the Friday non-violent protests against the Apartheid Wall and settlements in various West Bank villages, injuring five participants, including three teenagers, with rubber-coated metal bullets and causing dozens of suffocation cases due to tear gas inhalation.

Al-Quds printed a picture of Palestinian protesters, including small children, raising Palestinian flags during the weekly march in Nabi Saleh, a village west of Ramallah. Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida printed photos of the clashes that broke out in the Qalqiliya-area village of Kufr Qaddoum after Israeli soldiers used force to disperse the protests.

Al-Ayyam featured a statement by Amnesty International calling for a full, independent and impartial investigation of the repeated violations by the Israel Prison Service (IPS) against hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners and to hold those responsible accountable.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Denmark’s Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal said that all goods produced by Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank should have clear labels of origin on them as a prelude to boycott all settlements products.

Al-Quds said on its front page that delegations from Hamas and Fatah movement will meet in the Egyptian capital Cairo next week to address the points of disagreement between them, especially the formation of the national unity government.
