Newspapers Review: Dailies Highlight Nakba Activities

RAMALLAH, May 16, 2012 (WAFA) – Rallies and protests commemorating the 64th anniversary of the 1948 Nakba, the day Palestinians were uprooted from their homes in Palestine in 1948 and which led to the establishment of Israel, were the highlight of Wednesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Ayyam dominant front page story highlighted rallies across the Palestinian Territory, Israel, refugee camps in Arab countries commemorating the Nakba Day as well as the clashes that broke out between protesters and Israeli soldiers across the West Bank, leaving behind dozens of injuries and arrests.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida printed photos of thousands of Palestinians participating in the central Nakba event held in Ramallah, along with pictures of Israeli soldiers arresting a bleeding man and a child in East Jerusalem.

Al-Quds printed a picture of a Palestinian refugee woman raising the key to her house in the West Jerusalem neighborhood of Talibyeh that was taken over by Israelis in 1948.

The three dailies reported that the new Palestinian government, headed by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, will be sworn-in in front of President Mahmoud Abbas later on Wednesday.

Al-Quds reported on its front page that an international warrant has been issued against Mohammad Rashid, also known as Khaled Salam, a former official who has been charged with several accounts of corruption and theft of state funds.
