Newspapers Review: End of Hunger Strike Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, May 15, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Tuesday highlighted the end of the hunger strike of the Palestinian prisoners following a deal with the Israel Prison Service on Monday.

The dailies reported on details of the deal, brokered by Egypt, which included end of solitary confinement, allowing visitations for prisoners from Gaza, restraints on administrative detention and other issues related to improving living conditions in the Israeli jails.

Al-Quds said that Israel, as a goodwill gesture to President Mahmoud Abbas, will deliver the remains of 100 Palestinian fighters killed since 1967 to the Palestinian Authority as part of the deal with the striking prisoners.

Al-Ayyam printed a photo of Palestinians celebrating the deal in the city of Gaza, while al-Hayat al-Jadida printed picture of celebrations in Ramallah.

Al-Quds reported on its front page the European Union Foreign Affairs Council conclusions on the Middle East peace process adopted at its meeting on Monday, stating that Israel’s policy and developments on the ground may threaten the viability of a two-state solution.

Al-Ayyam featured Abbas’ address to the Palestinian people on Monday commemorating the 64th anniversary of the Nakba Day when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were uprooted from their homes in Palestine in 1948 and which led to the establishment of Israel.

The daily quoted Abbas in his speech saying “We are staying in this land; staying like oaks, staying like our olive trees.”

The three newspapers reported on nation-wide activities commemorating Nakba Day in the Palestinian Territory as well as a general strike and activities inside Israel planned for Tuesday.

Al-Quds editorial tackled the victory of the striking Palestinian prisoners that coincided with the Nakba Day and stressed Palestinian steadfastness and adherence to their land and homes.
