Activists Demonstrate, Block Entry to International Offices in Gaza

GAZA, May 13, 2012 (WAFA) – A number of Palestinian activists Sunday demonstrated in front of a number of international organizations’ offices in Gaza to protest their silence regarding the striking Palestinian prisoners.

The activists demonstrated in front of offices of the Red Cross office and United Nations and blocked staff from entering for several hours, as well as lifted banners calling to end the prisoners’ sufferings and denouncing the international silence.

The activists issued a statement in which they threatened to escalate measures against these organizations if they do not take immediate action to support the prisoners.

The statement called on the international community to pressure Israel to immediately release the two prisoners Bilal Thiab and Thaer Halahleh, who have been on an open-ended hunger strike protesting their administrative detention for 76 days.

Palestinian activists from the West Bank demonstrated earlier this week in front of UN offices and Red Cross in Ramallah and prevented staff from entering for several hours in solidarity with the striking Palestinian prisoners.

Around 2000 Palestinian prisoners went on an open-ended hunger strike on April 17 demanding better living conditions, visitation rights, end of isolation policy, and end of administrative detention among others.
