RAMALLAH, May 9, 2012 (WAFA) – The European Union celebrated Europe Day in Ramallah Wednesday with a display of European and other activities.
However, as Palestinians watch the hunger strike of their sons in Israeli prison, dozens of youths and families of prisoners held a sit-in outside the place where Europe Day events were planned demanding European intervention on behalf of the striking prisoners.
Prime Minister Salam Fayyad spoke to the families reiterating the Palestinian Authority’s commitment and support for the striking prisoners.
He along with EU representative to the Palestinian Territory John Gatt Rutter attended the opening ceremony for Europe Day.
Fayyad listened to the concerns of the families and assured them that PA is putting great efforts to save the lives of Palestinian prisoners.
He held Israel fully responsible for the life of Palestinian prisoners, adding that their demands correspond with international law.
He commended the EU for its clear position in support of the Palestinian prisoners and called for more effective efforts and moves.
Gatt Rutter said, “We work together with the PA to build a future democratic Palestinian state.”
He added that this remains Europe’s goal and fundamental foreign policy issue and they will achieve justice for the Palestinian people.
