Newspapers Review: Striking Prisoners’ Appeals Rejected

RAMALLAH, May 8, 2012 (WAFA) – The Israeli Supreme Court’s rejection of appeals by hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners, and the new government formation dominated Tuesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted the Israeli Supreme Court’s rejection of appeals by Thaer Halahleh and Bilal Diab to end their administrative arrest. The daily considered the Israeli ruling as a “death sentence” against the prisoners that have been on hunger strike for 71 days.

Al-Ayyam highlighted announcement of a new government formation within the next two days, adding that the new government will take the constitutional oath later this week in front of President Mahmoud Abbas.

It reported on well informed sources that while Prime Minister Salam Fayyad continues to head the new government, Birzeit University’s former president Nabil Kassis will become minister of finance.

The main focus of al-Quds’ front page was Israeli supreme eviction orders of a house and a shop in the Old City of Jerusalem for the benefit of settlers under the pretext that they are “old Jewish properties prior to 1948.” The daily printed a picture of the house and shop.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida featured Abbas’ meeting with the Chinese envoy to the peace process in the Middle East, Wu Sike, during which Abbas stressed that the Palestinian Authority is holding international talks to pressure Israel to respond to the striking-prisoners’ demands.

Al-Quds reported that the Palestinian prisoners, who started a mass open-ended hunger strike on April 17, are deliberating on refusing the Israeli poor responses to their demands.
