RAMALLAH, May 5, 2012 (WAFA) –Palestinian activists Saturday took down Israeli flags raised along Highway 60 that connects Ramallah to the northern West Bank city of Nablus and replaced them with Palestinian flags.
One of the activists told WAFA that replacing the Israeli flags with Palestinian flags on West Bank road was a message of support to and solidarity with the hunger-striking prisoners in Israeli jails.
“What we did was a national, moral and legal duty toward the sacrifices of our prisoners and to assert our right in the occupied territory,” said the activist.
The activists started at dawn from the prisoners’ support tent in Ramallah to remove the Israeli flags put up to mark Israel's establishment in 1948.
Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners went on an open-ended hunger strike on April 17 protesting the deteriorating living conditions in Israeli jails, generating mass popular and official support.
