Premier says No Limit to Freedom of Press

RAMALLAH, May 3, 2012 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Salam Fayyad Thursday stressed that there will be no limit to freedom of the press in the Palestinian Territory.

Speaking at a ceremony in Ramallah marking World Press Freedom Day, Fayyad told journalists that he understands what they have been feeling recently regarding attempts to restrict their work.

“As part of our absolute commitment to freedoms in Palestine, we are also committed to unlimited freedom of the press,” he said.

He said he realizes that journalists have recently felt that there was restriction on their work and on their freedom of expression, explaining that he will not bypass this matter if journalists will be expected to deliver the Palestinian message to the rest of the world.

He said the laws governing the work of journalists and freedoms should be developed to avoid any loopholes that could be used to restrict freedoms.

“I am convinced that any restriction on freedom of the press and expression cannot be good for the moral values we want the Palestinian state to be based on,” he said.
