More than 20 Hurt in Clashes outside Ofer Prison

RAMALLAH, May 2, 2012 (WAFA) – More than 20 people were hurt Wednesday when Israeli soldiers at Ofer military camp and prison, bordering Ramallah, fired tear gas at Birzeit University students who gathered outside the prison in support of striking prisoners.

The soldiers showered the protesters with tear gas and rubber bullets as soon as they reached the gate separating the Ramallah area from the prison compound. Soldiers also sprayed the protesters with foul water.

Around 1600 prisoners started April 17 an open hunger strike demanding better prison treatment and conditions as well as an end to punishment through solitary confinement.

A couple of prisoners, Bilal Diab and Thaer Halahleh, who have been on hunger strike for 65 days were reported in serious health condition.
