RAMALLAH, May 1, 2012 (WAFA) – The ongoing open-ended hunger strike Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails started on April 17 dominated Tuesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida’s main headline said more prisoners were joining the strike, while an Israeli human rights organizations warning that the prisoners, Thaer Halahleh and Bilal Diab, who entered their 64th day of hunger strike, were facing death.
The main front page article in al-Ayyam newspaper featured President Mahmoud Abbas announcing at the Tunisian Constituent Assembly that the Palestinian leadership has decided to bring up the issue of the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails at the United Nations.
Both dailies printed photos of Palestinians raising banners in support to the striking prisoners in several protests in Ramallah and Hebron on Monday.
Al-Quds reported that the Islamic Jihad has threatened to end the calm with Israel and take retaliatory measures if any of the striking prisoners dies.
Al-Quds marked the International Labor Day, which coincides on Tuesday, featuring several activities organized to commemorate that day across the Palestinian Territory.
