Prisoner Refuses Blood Transfusion Protesting Administrative Detention

RAMALLAH, April 8, 2012 (WAFA) – A Palestinian prisoner suffering from Thalassemia announced he will refrain from receiving required blood transfusion to protest the extension of his administrative detention for the third time in a row, Sunday said a statement by the Thalassemia Patients' Friends Society (TPFS).

Mohammad Sulaiman, 27, was arrested in April 2012 and served two six-month administrative detention orders. He was sentenced to a third order few days ago despite his acute medical condition.

TPFS coordinator Bara’ al-Muheisry told WAFA that Sulaiman needs blood transfusion every 20 to 30 days to maintain appropriate iron levels in his blood.

Lack of blood transfusion and medicinal treatment, which Israeli Prison Service does not provide, will lead to high amounts of iron building up in Sulaiman’s body that will weaken the heart muscle.

His health condition will deteriorate within 10 days if he does not receive blood transfusion on time, al-Muheisry added.

TPFS called on governmental institutions and human rights groups to uphold their responsibilities towards Sulaiman and take immediate action to end his illegal arrest.
