Israel Must Commit to Peace Requirements, says Erekat

JERICHO, March 5, 2012 (WAFA) – PLO Executive Committee member Saeb Erekat Monday said that Israel must commit to requirements for peace proposed by any party to achieve peace in the Middle East, according to a statement issued by his office.

He said following a meeting with US Consul General in Jerusalem Daniel Rubinstein that peace and stability cannot be achieved by sounding the drums of war.

Peace, he added, demands to stop dealing with Israel as a state above the law and to compel it to accept the peace requirements, namely accepting the two state solution on the 1967 borders, halting all settlement activities, including in East Jerusalem, and release of prisoners, particularly those arrested before 1994.

He called on the US administration to immediately intervene on behalf of striking prisoner Hana’ Shalabi to secure her release from Israeli jails and to cancel the administrative detention policy of the Israeli government.
Shalabi, who was released in the prisoners' exchange deal in October, has been on hunger strike for 18 consecutive days to protest her detention without charge of trial.
