Newspaper Review: Dailies Highlight Abbas’ Meeting with Blair

RAMALLAH, February 12, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Arabic Palestinian dailies Sunday highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with the Quartet Representative, Tony Blair.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida featured Abbas calling on Arab countries to support certain political steps and fund the Palestinian Authority.

Al-Quds quoted Abbas saying: “There will be no resumption of negotiations without freezing settlement activities and recognizing the two-state solution.”

The three dailies focused on the demonstrations across the West Bank in solidarity with the Palestinian prisoner, Khader Adnan, and the Human Rights Watch’s calls on Israel to end Adnan’s administrative arrest.

Al-Ayyam reported on the plans of Israeli right-wing lawmakers from the Likud party to tour Al-Aqsa compound in what Palestinians and Muslims fear is preparation to demolish al-Aqsa Mosque to build the Third Temple on its ruins.

It reported on Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh saying, during his visit to Tahran to celebrate the 33 anniversary of the Islamic revolution in Iran: “Hamas will never recognize Israel.”

The three papers printed photos of Palestinians demonstrating the arrest of Adnan and the settlers’ activities.

Al-Quds editorial questioned Haniyeh’s motives to visit Iran, regardless of the negative political consequences resulting from such move.
