Newspaper Review: Dailies Highlight Abbas’ Statements on Talks

RAMALLAH, February 1, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian dailies Wednesday highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ statements regarding the failure of the Palestinian-Israeli talks in Amman.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam quoted Abbas, during an interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit, saying: “Israel must speed up the peace process and the two-state solution became unlikely under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rule.”

Al-Quds reported on Abbas’ calls to speed up the Palestinian elections process in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a photo of Abbas during his meeting with the chairman of the Central Elections Commission, Hanna Nasser, in the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.

It featured Jordan’s King Abdullah calling on the international community to increase support to efforts being made to revive the peace process in the Middle East.

Al-Quds front page story quoted CIA Director James Clapper saying the fall of the Syrian regime is inventible.

The three papers reported on few Palestinian websites such as WAFA news agency, Fatah official website and Ma’an news agency being interrupted by unknown hackers leading to a shutdown that lasted for few hours.

Al-Quds featured Netanyahu’s attempt to legalize random settlements by forming a committee to prevent evacuating the settlers from these settlements.

Al-Quds editorial discussed the growing settlement activities by which the Israeli government listed 70 settlements as a national priority to be expanded and supported in the West Bank.
