CAIRO, November 27, 2011 (WAFA) - Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, welcomed the “constructive meeting” in Cairo between President Mahmoud Abbas and the Head of the Political Office of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, on Thursday, said an OIC press release published on Saturday.

Ihsanoglu underlined the importance of Palestinian national unity in boosting the accomplishments recorded in the international arena, particularly following Palestine’s accession to full membership of UNESCO, and in following through efforts for membership in the United Nations, said the statement.

It added, “The Secretary General noted that internal Palestinian harmony would unify the efforts to achieve the aspirations of the Palestinian people for an end to Israeli occupation and for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital.”
