IBSA Inaugurates Sports Center In Ramallah

RAMALLAH, November 19, 2011 (WAFA) – India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) inaugurated Saturday along with Ramallah Municipality a multipurpose new $1 million sports center in Ramallah.

The project, built on property donated by the Ramallah Municipality, consists of the construction of a 2450 square meter multipurpose sports hall comprising an indoor basketball, volleyball, football, handball and tennis court. It will seat over 400 spectators for sporting events and competitions.

It was implemented through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) “as a pioneering initiative to enhance cooperation amongst developing countries in the fight against hunger and poverty,” said a joint IBSA, UNDP and Ramallah Municipality press release.

“IBSA countries have in a number of occasions called for the establishment of a sovereign, democratic, independent, united and viable Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” said IBSA representative.

Recognizing the true partnership between Ramallah municipality, IBSA and UNDP, mayor of Ramallah, Janet Mikhail, highlighted the importance of this center in accommodating the local needs and enriching the sports scene in Ramallah.

The location of the center will allow children, youth and families across the economic spectrum to easily access and utilize the facility in advancement of their athletic skills as well as their physical well being, said the press release.

“Today we inaugurate another piece of the development for freedom agenda,” said  Yasmine Sherif, deputy special representative for UNDP’s Program of Assistance to the Palestinian People (PAPP).

“We hope that this will give young Palestinians the opportunity to train and compete, firstly among themselves and then with their international peers, just like sportsmen and women all over the world,” she said.

The project also provided the supporting infrastructure for the pilot Palestinian Youth Sports League, which will give children and youth between the ages of 5 and 18 an organized approach to focus their energies on developing their athletic and teamwork skills, said the press release.
