RAMALLAH, November 15, 2011 (WAFA) – PLO Executive Committee Memebr, Saeb Erekat, Tuesday said the role of the Quartet is not limited to facilitating talks between Palestinians and Israelis, but extends to prepare the proper mutual grounds and environment to resume negotiations.
Speaking to Voice of Palestine radio, Erekat stressed that the ball is now in the Israeli court, adding that Israel needs to fulfill its commitment to halt settlement activities and accept the concept of the two-state solution based on 1967 borders.
Erekat said Palestinians will continue to meet with the Quartet and some of its members to clarify the Palestinian position regarding final status issues.
He demanded that the international community not treat Israel as above the law, saying that not holding Israel accountable and not abiding it to signed agreements hinders the peace process.
In a related matter, Erekat noted that the Palestinian leadership is keeping its options open to head to the United Nations Security Council, the General Assembly, and the International Court of Justice, but continues to seek the Security Council statehood membership. He stressed that the decision to head to the Council aims to ascertain the Palestinian right to self-determination.
