RAMALLAH, November 12, 2011 (WAFA) – Saturday’s issues of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused on the United Nations Security Council’s failure to decide on the Palestinian application for full UN membership, as well as President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Tunisia.
Al-Quds reported on its front page that the admission committee in the Security Council failed to reach agreement over the Palestinian application for statehood membership, stressing the Palestinian leadership’s persistence to carry on with the bid by considering alternative solutions and discussing the situation with friendly states and international bodies.
PLO Executive Committee Member, Saeb Erekat, stressed that the UN committee’s report does not nullify the Palestinian right to head to the Security Council, added the paper.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Abbas’ meeting with Foued Mebazaa, the acting Tunisian President, after which Abbas stressed that dissolving the Palestinian Authority is not an option, regardless of the outcome of voting on the Palestinian bid in the Security Council.
The three pages printed pictures of Abbas’ arrival in Tunis, as well as his meetings with several Tunisian figures.
Al-Ayyam newspaper chose to focus on the Israeli assaults on the weekly marches against settlements and the Apartheid Wall across the West Bank on Friday. The protests also commemorated the seventh anniversary of the death of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
The daily said an international activist was injured by Israeli rubber bullets, whereas dozens of Palestinian, Israeli and international protesters suffocated from tear gas.
An interview with Arafat’s daughter, Zahwah, who currently resides in Malta, was featured in all three newspapers on the anniversary of his death. The headlines quoted her saying, “My father commanded me to never let go of Palestine.”
Al-Quds editorial commemorated the anniversary of Arafat’s death, reminiscing on the late leader’s achievements in the PLO and the Palestinian Authority. The editorial urged Hamas and Fatah to apply the reconciliation agreement between them and end Palestinian internal division.
