Swedish Archbishop Slams Government’s Negative UNESCO Vote

CAIRO, November 5, 2011 (WAFA) – A senior Swedish clergyman Friday slammed his government’s negative vote against Palestine’s UNESCO membership, according to press reports.

Anders Wejryd, archbishop of the Church of Sweden, said Sweden should not have voted against Palestine’s membership of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Saturday said the Egyptian Middle East News Agency.

Wejryd , in a letter to Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said “to our great surprise, Sweden belonged to the small group of 14 countries that chose to vote against Palestine’s membership in UNESCO.”

He stressed that the vote sent the wrong signal when Sweden should have showed its support for a two state solution to the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis instead.
