Newspapers Review: Netanyahu’s Policies Dominate Dailies

RAMALLAH, November 3, 2011 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted on their front pages of the Thursday issue Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s defense of his settlement policy and the international condemnation of settlement expansion.

While the top front page headlines in al-Quds and Al-Hayat al-Jadida touched on the Israeli settlement issues, al-Ayyam gave it second priority, where its top front page story had to do with Syria’s approval of an Arab League initiative to end the violence there. However, the paper also said the Syrian opposition had their doubts about the regime’s agreement.

The front pages of the three papers had different stories. One story talked about the demolition of a house in al-Tur in East Jerusalem.

The papers also had holiday greeting ads on the front pages on the occasion of al-Adha holiday, which starts Sunday.

The opinion pieces in al-Ayyam tackled different issues, including Israel’s policies that seem to have increased its international isolation, and the aftermath of the UNESCO membership.

Al-Quds had two short editorials, one saying that it is not enough to verbally condemn settlement activities, in reference to Western condemnation of Netanyahu’s decision to accelerate settlement expansion in the West Bank, after UNESCO’s decision to admit Palestine as a member state. The second one was on Syria and developments there, following the Arab League’s intervention to stop the fighting.
